Tellecommunications in the Social Media World

TELUS and Bell are both two huge telecommunications companies that have expanded into dominating its industry over the past few years. In today’s world having a strong social media presence is important for any type of company to grow. After looking at the Twitter, Instagram and Facebook pages of both Bell and TELUS, it is easy to say that TELUS is ahead of the social media game compared to Bell. TELUS has a much larger number of followers and posts on these social media platforms, where as Bell does not.

Here are the current numbers for their social media accounts:

Bell Social Media Following:

  • Twitter: 1382 followers/ 8813 tweets

  • Instagram: 4373 followers/53 posts

  • Facebook: 134619 followers/ 137242 likes

TELUS Social Media Following:

  • Twitter: 63.4k followers/ 36.1k tweets

  • Instagram: 15.4k followers/ 180 posts

  • Facebook: 864069 followers/ 922372 likes

Twitter Tips & How Bell and TELUS Are Using them to its Advantage:

According to “10 Surprising Twitter Starts to Help You Reach More Followers”, tweeting with image links get two times the engagement rate of those without links and images, and tweets with less than 100 characters get 17% more engagement.

From looking at both huge companies Twitter pages I can see a big difference in the level of interactive-ness between the company and their followers. Twitter responds to a lot of their followers’ tweets with photos and messaging constantly. Bell has not responded to any of their followers’ tweets for the past few months. Bell has been using the strategy of incorporating hashtags into their tweets.

Tweeting with hashtags are said to get 2 times more the engagement. Bell also started the Bell Let’s Talk campaign to support mental health. They donated 5 cents to each retweet of their tweet, and each tweet that was using the #BellLetsTalk hashtag. This Bell campaign was very successful as it got millions of people to tweet or retweet #BellLetsTalk. TELUS has started to use the same strategy by having the #TelusWise End Cyber-Bullying Video Contest.  On Twitter, both Bell and TELUS have been using tactics to increase followers, likes and shares, but TELUS is still in the lead because of their persistent posting and replies.

Can Bell and TELUS be using Instagram better?

From looking at the TELUS and Bell Instagram pages I can see that they both post pictures and videos that reflect their brand personality. TELUS once again does have a much larger following on this platform. TELUS posts a lot more on here compared to Bell which leads to them having more likes and comments as well. I do think that both companies can improve their presence on Instagram since it has been growing rapidly over the past few years and can help them gain a bigger audience.

Is TELUS using Facebook better than Bell? Where is Bell going wrong?

Facebook Social Media

After looking at the TELUS and Bell Facebook pages it is clear to me again that TELUS is in the lead with keeping their audience on this social platform updated with new posts almost every day. Whatever TELUS has posted on their Instagram and Twitter, they incorporate or post on again on Facebook. TELUS is also doing a good job of being interactive with their followers on this platform. Bell on the hand barely has any shares and doesn’t post as often but is doing a good job of responding to comments and addressing problems by telling followers they can private message the company if they have problems with anything.

Who is Leading the Social Media Game?

Both Bell and TELUS have a consistent brand personality throughout all their social media accounts. They both do respond to and engage with their followers and keep up with their image. TELUS, is much stronger than Bell in this aspect because they are way more consistent with responding to their audience. By the numbers, it’s obvious to see that TELUS is ahead of Bell with their social media presence.
