One of many activities included in this incredible day trip to the adorable Soufrière, St Lucia was a taking a sulphur springs mud bath.

Arriving

Our tour group got a taste of what was to come while visiting the Diamond Botanical Gardens (which has its own upcoming post!).  I spotted grey-tinted waters making their way through the jungle. The unexpected colour contrasting against the forest greens had me very excited for that afternoon.

How very naïve of me.

I clearly didn’t do my research on this one. Weaving through stunning (albeit, terrifying) roads alongside the world’s only drive-in volcano, passengers started getting suspicious. Silently blaming each other for the nasty egg smell appearing in the vehicle, nobody realized the true culprit to be our destination: the sulphur springs mud bath.

The Mud Bath

The headache I got from the smell was excruciating, but I’m a big baby. The mud bath, however, made it all worth it. Your first step is to dive into steaming water (again, the boiling water was difficult to conquer, but I’m very sensitive). Then you get to paint creative designs of creamy grey and black mud across your body. Letting the mud harden, you have the chance to soak up the sun before washing it off again. Hand prints, war paint, it’s all good fun – but the photos of me are quite embarrassing, so I’ll pass on sharing those.

The line looks daunting, but it really took no time at all. Before I knew it, I was back in a towel feeling refreshed, rejuvenated, and revived (they say the healing minerals can make you look 12 years younger – but tell that to my eternal dark circles). My skin felt fantastic, and I felt a surge of energy to take on the rest of the day.

I did unfortunately have to choose between the beauty regime and the option to drive into the volcano – but that just means I have something planned for the next St Lucia trip!
