Career Transition
INTERNSHIPS AND… FELLOWSHIPS… AND RESIDENCIES – OH MY!

Career transition – how you get an advantage.
Education to Career Transition.
If you haven’t connected with the header, chances are you’ve never seen the 1939 classic American film, The Wizard of Oz. The sense of impending doom when trying to find a new job is often paralleled to the experiences new grads face when entering the work force after graduation. New grads may have a portfolio of theoretical and practical knowledge: but entering the ‘post-secondary-to-workforce‘ career transition can still be a challenge.
When post-secondary grads are enter the marketplace they quickly find out that you need experience. Not to mention that new grads want to take advantage of their skills and diplomas for the field they’re most equipped to work in. So, how do you as a new graduate show employers your transferable skills and valuable experience?
Student Career Search Workshop
An HR firm held their Student Job Search Workshop to help new grads with career transition into the workforce. Below are some of the skills necessary for a successful search in this all-day activity:
- The 30-second elevator pitch
- Learning the keys to networking
- Answering behavioural interview questions
- Writing targeted cover letters and resumes
- Leveraging technology on platforms such as LinkedIn
Those who took part in this workshop learned the secrets of getting ahead by working smarter, not harder so that looking for a job, is no longer ‘a job in itself’.
One of the important things to remember when looking for a job is to stay balanced – don’t let the process overwhelm you. Take time to do the things you will enjoy before you’re tied down to a 9 to 5. Let this be an opportunity for learning.
