Do you think that things going wrong in fresh Produce business is a bad thing? Months of research and planning where spent getting ready for our first ever shipment to arrive. The moment it came in, and we started to unload the container, we could smell loss all over the place. Turns out, it is one the most beneficial experiences we went through.
I am in the import business of fresh produce and the shipment arrived in an expected condition, that’s one way to describe it, because of some issues with the quality. We experienced some delay during transit and the product started going bad and it was a rough start for our business. It exposed us to a totally different, on the other hand potential, market that we never thought of targeting. It expanded our network in the industry dramatically and gave us a good lesson on how to manage emergency situations.
Things going wrong in business, specially on startup, is certainly much harder. On the other hand, it helps you understand how real life works rather than researching and planning. This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t put enough effort in your planning phase as things will go worse. No matter how hard and accurate your plan is, things going wrong in business is a fact of life. Our learning experience from one shipment going wrong was as beneficial as tens going smoothly. You have to have your share of loss at some point to be able to manage your business successfully.
There lies opportunity!
