As social media has become the number one way for companies to advertise and reach out to consumers, it is very important for them to have a strong presence and use the social media platforms to the best of their abilities. I took the time to look through two well known companies Twitter, Instagram and Facebook to see how well they connect with their consumers and what tactics they use to do so.

Air Canada

The first company’s social media I looked through was Air Canada. I noticed they have a strong presence on all three platforms with a nice aesthetic on their Instagram that carried through to Twitter and Facebook. I noticed that they post everything in English as well as in French to help reach a larger audience, as many people across Canada speak French. As aesthetically pleasing as their Instagram was, I found that their strongest platform used is Twitter. They post very often, engage with consumers, post about alerts and warnings for upcoming flights, as well as even having a separate account for fare offers. I feel as though Air Canada’s Twitter has the best mix of everything you would hope for from an airline social media; cool travel photos, alerts, and engagement with consumers.

KLM Airlines Millions of Followers!

The next company’s social media I analyzed was KLM Airlines. Similar to Air Canada, they had a pleasant looking Instagram that flowed and looked similar to their Twitter and Facebook accounts. Across all platforms, many photos they posted had captions looking to engage consumers by asking questions such as, “Who’s wearing an ugly Christmas sweater tonight?” on a photo of what looks like KLM staff in Christmas sweaters. In terms of which platform I feel they used and engaged with the most, I would again say Twitter. With their 2.37 million followers, they are doing a great job at posting engaging content that makes people want to respond, posting artsy photos about flying and traveling to get people wanting to fly, as well as posting short videos they have made such as one recapping the year of 2017.

It’s very impressive to me how big of a following each of these airlines have, for the main fact that they are airlines. However, if I had to choose which company does a better job of reaching the consumer I would say that KLM Airlines wins. I chose them (not just for their 2.37 million Twitter followers) but for how they engage their followers in conversation and post regularly. And in posting multiple times a day, they manage to send out well thought out content to keep people responding and enjoying what they post.

So, if you ever need some tips on how to grow your social media platforms, it might benefit you to take a look at some airline company’s Twitter accounts.
