Kingsman: The Secret Service is a movie released in 2014 that was met with critical and financial success. This is good because it is a good movie that parodies recent spy movie, like the 007 franchise, while still maintaining its own identity. The sequel is really bad.
Tropes: and where it goes wrong
Kingsman: The Secret Service parodies tropes the audience is far too familiar with and makes it funny. The Golden Circle just copies these tropes and does nothing with them. If a movie simply copies tropes and does not change them in any way then it is just copying a bad movie and it becomes a bad movie.
The Action
Do you remember that great scene in the first Kingsman when Colin Firth fights a bunch of people in the church and it used that interesting slo-mo camera lead follow? Well it does that again. For. Every. Fight. It gave me a fucking headache. The fight scenes have no weight to them which, as a result, makes them boring.
The Villain
The villain in this movie sucks. Sam Jackson in the first Kingsman is awesome because he is invested into the role. He has the plan of a Bond villain, and parodies the stereotype while also adding something new. He is flamboyant and extremely funny. His plan matches that of a Bond villain. The villain in the new Kingsman sucks. She has no real motivation therefore is boring. She doesn’t even really do anything so every scene with her amounts to nothing. Her character is just a reason for audiences to have a new Kingsman movie hence why she is so boring to watch.
The Acting
The acting was pretty bad in this. Everyone seemed like they didn’t want to be there which seems like the director didn’t do his job. Mark Strong was the only one who seemed to try and bring life to the movie. Even though Mark Strong tried his best in the movie his character was still plagued with terrible, terrible writing.
The Writing
Writing in this movie took a nose dive from the very beginning. Mark Strong’s character was just a huge cliche. “Remember your training Eggsy!” Strong would shout. The Kingsman building blows up and some of their partners die. Eggsy discovers this and is understandably upset and the first thing Mark Strong says is “Remeber your training Eggsy!”
Julianne Moore’s character is another poorly written highlight. She tries to be what Sam Jackson was in the first Kingsman and it does not work. Sam Jackson’s character has personality that parodies Bond villains and makes it new and funny. Julianne Moore’s character is weird just to be weird and it makes no sense.
What I Like about Kingsman
Even though my general opinion on this movie is I don’t like it. I don’t think anyone should see this movie because it is bad however there are some good things about the movie.
I enjoyed the Western music they would play when the Statesman were fighting. All of the CGI looks good. But then again what movie doesn’t look good these days. Bottom line is the movie was bad. 3/10
