What is a progressive?

Progressivism is the political and social movement at the ground-roots level of modern discourse in a society where large numbers of “progressive” or Liberal-aligned citizens mobilize to over-turn oppressive policies, both legal and societal.

Prominent Progressives

In the immediate aftermath of the disastrous U.S election victory of Donald Trump, an enormous amount of progressives in the U.S and abroad have mobilized to stop the rise of radical conservatism.  Far-right policies and politicians have threatened to disrupt civilized societies globally. Leaders such as Wilders, Le Pen and Leitch in the Netherlands, France, and Canada respectively have been defeated in their political bids.

The modern leaders of the Democratic party in the U.S can be considered to be progressive. Leaders such as Senators Booker, Warren, Harris, Gillibrand, and currently the most popular US politician Bernie Sanders all aligned with Progressive causes and widely & increasingly supporting liberal policies in the growing discourse of US politics.

Some of the causes in recent memory the Progressive movement has mobilized for include candidate Trump’s treatment of women and minorities. As well the “women’s march”. The women’s march was a global march of progressives, campaigning for the equal treatment of women on January 21st. This was a direct response to Trump’s inauguration on January 20th.

Since then, the “Women’s March” has become aligned with the “Black Lives Matter” movement. Together, they have been jointly campaigning and protesting against a wide range of progressive issues. Including police brutality, racial policing practices, treatment of minorities and women. And of course, Donald Trump and his increasingly corrupt administration.

In Canada, our Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, a liberal, can be classified as a progressive. Trudeau, in recent memory, has campaigned on a list of issues such as Marijuana Legalization, policing reform. As well as the need for acceptance of the LGBTQ community and diversity in our society. He promised tax reform to accommodate the middle class.
