Visiting Cesky Krumlov in September

Ever wonder what it might be like to immerse yourself into one of your favourite childhood fairytales? Stepping foot into Cesky Krumlov will make all of your childhood dreams come true, and more. Built in the 13th century, Cesky Krumlov is filled with old cobblestone roads, an impressive castle, and a charming river that circles the town. With the summer crowds gone, and the air still warm, the fall is a fantastic time to visit the town. Although some suggest to do Cesky Krumlov as a day trip from Prague, I believe the town deserves SO much more attention than that (dare I say even more so than Prague!?). Keep reading for the top things to do when visiting Cesky Krumlov in September.

The Castle

Make sure that visiting the castle is at the top of your priority list! Especially if you are only coming for the day. The castle tour is exceptional, and gives meaningful insight into the history of the town. Also, don’t forget to climb the tower at the end – the view is most definitely worth it. If you don’t have time or don’t want to pay for the castle tour, make sure to at least wander the grounds. There is a beautiful garden at the top of the hill, and multiple lookouts. If you’re feeling ambitious, it is definitely worth it to climb up to the castle at sunrise, and enjoy the view while the rest of the tourists are still in bed.

Do the Ghost Tour

Whether you believe in ghosts or not, for a free night time activity, I suggest doing the free ghost tour. It is a fun way to see the town at night while learning a little bit about the town’s history. Our guide was super passionate, which made it all the better. These tours run on tips, so make sure if you enjoyed the tour, to tip at the end!

Wander the village

This may seem obvious, but if you are not in any particular rush, you will find you can get the most out of the town by simply wandering around the narrow streets. It is amazing that even in a such small village, one can become so immersed that you can wander for days on end and never get bored.

Indulge in Traditional Food

For any goulash lovers this is a MUST. Although this may be unpopular opinion, I found the food in Cesky Krumlov to be even more authentic (and delicious) than that served in Prague. The best meals in Cesky Krumlov were served in the small restaurants, that came with a highly affordable price tag.

Experience the Town from a Raft

This one is only for those who have a little bit of extra time in the town. When visiting Cesky Krumlov in September, it may not be hot enough to go swimming, but it sure is nice enough to be on the water. When exploring the town, we found Maleček Rafting & Canoe, where we rented an inflatable canoe and viewed the town from the river. Let me tell you, this was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. Not only were the few rapids exhilarating, but the view of the old town from the water was incredible.

When we visited Cesky Krumlov, we only planned on staying one night, but living on a day-to-day basis, our plans quickly fell apart and we decided to stay in the town an extra two nights. Overall, I can’t recommend Cesky Krumlov enough. Especially if you are travelling busy European cities, I can’t tell you enough how important it is to slow down and enjoy the smaller things. Visiting Cesky Krumlov in September was one of the highlights of our trip, and I hope you enjoy it as much as we did.
