Bell and Telus: A look into social media marketing

While comparing the social media accounts of two of the largest competitors within their markets, Bell and Telus, you can immediately take away some key differences. Bell has built their reputation from being known as a contributor to communities and giving back – and that is evident among their social media accounts. Within all their service and product ads are posts about partnered sports teams or how Bell is engaged with the local community. However, its doesn’t seem that Bell engages one on one with their customers openly. That’s the main difference between the two companies’ social media accounts. Telus owns a separate twitter account that strictly deals with customer support and this account is to connect to them on a more personal level.

Looking closer, Telus appears to post more frequently than Bell, even if it is a short post saying it’s Monday or what have you, it gives the sense that the company is more active and is more willing to engage with their audience. Telus also posts a lot of GIFs and short clips on their social media site whereas Bell post still shot images. Not to take away from Bell as they are great photos, but the GIFs and videos that Telus uses of small and cute animals draw more attention to their audience. As someone is scrolling through Twitter or Facebook, they are most likely to stop and watch a clip on a cute small animal.

Where Bell excels at is that they try to capture the attention of the audience by trying to relate to them and trying to connect via an interest that both parties share. They do so by posting about a sports team or posting photos of celebrities or athletes and a short story about the photo. By doing this, Bell tries to connect to people on a more personal level however; the flaw in this is most people on social media are just skimming through their posts or timeline until something catches their attention. Most people might miss a story with a photo versus a one-line post and a short clip of a cute animal.

Conclusion

After reviewing both companies’ social media accounts and their content, I have to give Telus the upper hand. Telus in my opinion, has a better handler on social media. Their shorter post with short clips just grab the audience more and is more likely to stop someone form scrolling by it and missing the ad completely.
